Task List:- A dialogue box that shows a list of all of the applications currently
running. It enables you to switch between them or end a running task. You bring it up
by pressing the <Ctrl><Alt><Delete> keys at the same time.
Target:- The file or disk to which data is sent.
TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol):- The networking
protocols used on the Internet.
Telnet :- A protocol to allow a user of one computer to log in to another computer
over the network.
Terabyte :- A unit of memory measurement equal to 1,099,511,627,776 (one trillion)
bytes.
Terminal Emulation :- A communication software setting which synchronizes your
monitor with the remote host.
Text Editor :- A program that allows the creation or modification of the contents of a
text file.
Text Mode :- The mode that enables applications to display text but not graphic
images.
The Control Panel :- The Windows program which allows you to modify your system
while working with Windows.
Thread :- A series of followups on a particular topic in a larger group discussion.
TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) :- A popular file format for bitmapped graphics
that stores the information by defining graphical images in discrete blocks called
tags.
Tile :- A way of arranging open windows so that no windows overlap but all windows
are visible. Each window takes up a portion of the screen.
Title Bar :- Area at the top of a window which indicates the name of that window.
Timed Out :- When one computer fails to respond after a given amount of time, the
other disconnects because the connection "timed out".
Toggle Button :- A control that acts as an on/off button.
Token Ring :- A networking hardware system constructed as a ring of daisy chained
nodes. Each node passes a control message (token) around the ring. Whichever
node has the token can send a message.
Toolbar :- A bar that contains a set of buttons, menus, or other controls that you can
click to carry out common menu commands.
Topology :- The physical layout of network cabling.
Track :- Concentric circles of data sectors on a disk platter which contain data and
mark position points for the read/write heads.
Tractor :- A sprocket feed on a dot-matrix printer which handles continuous papers.
Transfer Protocol :- The method (i.e., X modem, Y modem, or Z modem) which
defines how a file will be transferred from one computer to another. Both the
sending and receiving computers must use the same transfer protocol.
Transmission :- Data that is sent electronically from one computer to another via
modem.
Trojan Horse :- A type of software which may contain hidden code and can damage
data.
True Type Fonts :- Fonts that are scalable and sometimes generated as bitmaps or
soft fonts, depending on the capabilities of your printer. True Type Fonts can be sized
to any height, and they print out exactly as they appear on the screen.
TSR :- Terminate and Stay Resident. A program designed to remain in memory at all
times. It can be called up at anytime.
Turbo :- A high speed computer setting which operates the CPU at high clock
speeds.
Twisted Pair Wire :- Twisted pair consists of two pairs of wires; one for transmitting
and one for receiving data. The wires in each pair are twisted together to reduce
induction between them. 10Base-T Ethernet cable is twisted pair.
